A lot of the housing up here went up between the fifties and the seventies, and plenty of it still has the original hardware on the front door. That means two things I see constantly: locks worn past the point where any key turns them smoothly, and double-cylinder deadlocks that need a key to get out.

That second one matters. A lock keyed on both sides is a fire risk, and in a rental it does not meet Victoria’s minimum standards. Swapping it for a key/knob deadbolt is a straight job and it is the single most common thing I do north of the river.

How fast can you get to Corio?

My front door needs a key to open from the inside. Is that legal?
