Most break-ins don’t break anything.
Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers looked at aggravated burglaries in hotspot areas in March 2025. Up to 8 in 10 came through an unlocked door or window, or were attempts where the offender gave up and left.
That’s the point of a deadbolt. A latch on its own can often be slipped or pushed back. A deadbolt throws a solid bolt into the frame that can’t be pushed back from outside, and a digital deadbolt can lock itself every time the door closes, so nobody has to remember.
Victoria recorded 24,277 residential burglaries in the year to March 2026. A deadbolt on the front and back doors is the cheapest way to make your house the one they walk past.

- Lock it, then push and pull the door. If it rattles or moves, a latch is the only thing holding it.
- Look for a second lock above the handle. If there isn’t one, there’s no deadbolt.
- Try to open it from inside without a key. If you can’t, you’ve got a key-both-sides deadbolt, which can slow you down in a fire.

Questions we get asked
Is a deadbolt really more secure than the lock we've got?
On most front doors, yes. The standard latch on a lot of homes can be slipped or forced back with a bit of pressure. A deadbolt throws a solid bolt into the frame that can't be pushed back from outside. RACV calls deadbolts a great first line of defence because they take much more force to pry back.
Can we still get out quickly in a fire?
Yes, with the right deadbolt. We fit single-cylinder deadbolts with a thumb-turn inside, so you open it by hand with no key. Deadbolts that need a key on both sides can be a fire risk on an exit door, and we can swap those over.
What is a digital deadbolt?
It's a deadbolt you open with a code, a fingerprint or your phone instead of a key. Most can be set to lock themselves after the door closes, so nobody forgets. Every one we fit keeps a key or emergency power override in case the battery runs flat.
Can the new deadbolt use the same key as our other locks?
Usually, yes. If your other locks take a compatible cylinder we can key the deadbolt to match, so you carry one key for the front door instead of two.
I rent. Can I add a deadbolt?
Victoria's rental minimum standards require a working deadlatch on external doors, and a deadbolt adds a second layer on top. You need your rental provider's consent to change or add a lock, and they can't unreasonably refuse. We can send you a written quote to pass on to your agent.
What does a deadbolt cost?
$195 all up on a door that's already drilled for a deadbolt, and $270 on a door that isn't. A digital deadbolt is $215 or $290 fitted, plus the lock itself. Prices include GST and the call-out.
